Fall of the Roman Republic Part I: Caesar and Company
« back to classes page
Why, and how, do republics fall? Maybe the decline and fall of the Roman Republic will give us some answers. We will start by looking at the lives of towering Romans from the first century BCE, as described by the ancient historian Plutarch in
The Age of Caesar: 5 Roman Lives
(Plutarch, ed. by James Romm, W.W. Norton, 2017). Pompey, Caesar, Cicero, Brutus, and Antony all were fighting to either transform or preserve the Republic. Their conflicts left Rome shaken. In a subsequent study group, we will then look at how Augustus arose and toppled the whole thing.
