Readings in Western Culture--Great Conversations

ClassGraphic Challenge your understanding in dialogue with others equally interested in exploring the Western cannon by reading selections curated by the Great Books Foundation. Discussions encourage participants to exchange ideas generated by some of our culture's most thought-provoking writers, from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment to contemporary cultures. Selections include prose, drama, philosophy, poetry, short stories and essays. For the Fall 2026 semester, we will use Classic Readings for Discussion (Great Books Foundation Vol. I, 2022). We will also read Doris Lessing's The Grass is Singing (Harper Preennial Modern Classes, 2008, originally published in 1950)  and selected essays from Best American Essays of the Century, edited by Joyce Carol Oates (Mariner, 2001) Other authors include Shakespeare, Swift, Adam Smith, representative arguments from the Federalist Papers as composed by Madison and Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin and Walt Whitman. Join us for lively conversations as well as an optional viewing of Theater Wit's Fall production of King Lear.
