War: What Is It Good For

ClassGraphic People have been making rules for armed conflict for centuries. When is a conflict an act of aggression versus a necessary war? How should war be honorably conducted? Michael Walzer, in his acclaimed book Just and Unjust Wars: A Moral Argument with Historical Illustrations (Basic Books, 2015, 5th Edition) addresses the development and change of the rules of war with examples ranging from Thucydides in the 5th Century BC to asymmetric warfare in the late 20th century.  We will read and discuss Walzer’s book for the first eleven weeks, reserving the last sessions of the term for shorter readings and discussions on how the laws of war can or should address the conduct of war in our time, characterized by economic weapons and the anonymity of drone warfare. Join us to examine these important questions.
