In American author Anne Roiphe's book For Rabbit, With Love and Squalor: An American Read (The Free Press, 2000), she describes how she fell in love with her favorite characters in literature like Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye, Harry Angstrom in Rabbit Run, and Robert Jordan from For Whom the Bell Tolls. In the telling, she interweaves the story of her own life, the ups and downs of being a writer, and the vicissitudes we all experience in life. Josh Cohen is a psychiatrist who also has a love for literature. In his book, How to Live, What to Do: In Search of Ourselves in Life and Literature (Pantheon Books, 2021), he delves into the personalities of some of his favorite literary heroes like Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, Jay Gatsby of The Great Gatsby, and Dorothea Brooke in Middlemarch. Don't worry if you haven't read all these books. Very few of us have, but this study group will give you the feeling that you have. And, who knows, the study group may inspire you to fill in the gaps in your reading.
