Genesis Through the Eyes of a Renowned Bible Teacher

ClassGraphic Nehama Leibowitz (1905 - 1991) was Israel's legendary teacher of the Bible. A gifted and demanding teacher, her approach to the Bible was reverential. She was a master of Biblical insight. The Bible's text is very concise, very "thrifty" with words. This leaves much room for commentary, and Biblical commentary was Nehama's specialty. In this study group we will delve into her most insightful commentaries on the first book of the Bible, Genesis. Among the topics to be discussed are Man Created in the Image of God; the Tree of Knowledge; Am I My Brother's Keeper; and A Test of Faith. Nehama's well known Studies in the Weekly Sedra (Torah Portion) will be provided to the class. Nehama dedicated her life to teaching the Bible to Israelis from all walks of life. It was her request that only one word other than her name and dates be inscribed on her tombstone; that word was "Teacher." Morah, in Hebrew.. We will also use the text Tales of Nehama by Leah Abramowitz (Gefen Publishing House, 2003). Please join us in what we hope will be an enriching personal and learning experience.
