Neil Simon (and Friends) at the Movies

ClassGraphic In 1983, Neil Simon became the only living playwright to have a New York theater, the Neil Simon Theatre, named in his honor. Who of us does not remember his wonderful romantic comedies like Barefoot in the Park, Promises, Promises, and Plaza Suite. Less well known are his more serious dramatic comedies, mostly autobiographical in nature. These plays earned him his greatest critical acclaim. In this study group we will view what is called "the autobiographical trilogy": Brighton Beach Memoirs, Biloxi Blues, and Broadway Bound. We will also view a related play Lost in Yonkers for which he won a Pulitzer Prize. To add variety to the mix we will intersperse three comedies which are in the spirit of Neil Simon's legacy: The Human Comedy with Mickey Rooney, Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays, and Wendy Wasserstein's The Heidi Chronicles. We look forward to your joining us in what we hope will be a most pleasurable seven weeks.
