Four Masters of the Short Story: Chekhov, Jackson, Pearlman, Wodehouse

ClassGraphic Short stories are loved by readers and revered by authors; both groups admiring the scope of a novel in the span of ten pages. In this study group, Anton Chekhov, P. G. Wodehouse, Shirley Jackson, and Edith Pearlman show us universal truths connecting four cultures over 150 years. These writers introduce us to people we’ve never known, yet whose problems we fathom and disentangle together. Masters of the small detail and large themes, our authors challenge us to see the ordinary lives hidden in extraordinary neighborhoods: bourgeois Russia, elegant London, horror-stricken suburbia, and sedate villages. Let’s look through their windows and talk about their stories. The texts we will use are: Forty Stories by Anton Chekhov and Robert Payne (Vintage Classics, 1991); Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson and Ottessa Moshfegh (Penguin Classics, 2017); Honeydew by Edith Pearlman (Little Brown Paperbacks, 2015); The Inimitable Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse (Warbler Classics, 2021). They are available from Amazon and thrift sellers.
