From Dawn to Dusk: Poetry from The New Yorker Magazine

ClassGraphic Last year marked the centenary of The New Yorker, and the anniversary was celebrated with the publication of two volumes, one for fiction and the second for poetry. This seven-week study group will explore the evolution of modern and contemporary poetry through the lens of A Century of Poetry in The New Yorker 1925–2025 (Knopf, 2025). This monumental anthology captures a hundred years of poetic voices, and is organized in part into groupings that follow the routines of daily life, such as Morning Bell, Lunch Break, After-Work Drink, Evening Walk, and Last Train Home. We will proceed through this daily timespan, covering poetry from each of the various groupings. As we take turns reading and discussing poems selected by participants, our focus will be on analysis and interpretation, with attention to the social contexts and artistic movements surrounding each group of poems and the selected poets. Together, we will engage with a diverse range of poets and styles, deepening our appreciation of poetry as both art and cultural commentary.
