In this study group, we will explore the Renaissance and the myths that surround it, as well as the importance of this period in history and its relevance to the centuries that followed. Ada Palmer, a professor at the University of Chicago and author of Inventing the Renaissance: The Myth of a Golden Age (University of Chicago Press, 2026), is an entertaining writer who brings the Renaissance vividly to life. She uses illuminating portraits of the people who lived through both the glories and disasters of Italian art, politics, and society. She also explores the kingdoms that sought to dominate the continent by taking pieces of Italy through war, while intervening in the city-states for power, plunder, or alliances. Finally, she examines figures such as Niccolò Machiavelli, who worked toward the development of the modern state and struggled to hold together Florence and other city-states as popes and kingdoms feuded. The author’s style and generosity to the characters, celebrates even the villains, who become understandable and resonate with our current chaos.The Audible version is brilliantly read while the printed version is segmented in a useful fashion and can be used to anchor a small yacht or prop up a table leg when finished.
