This group follows along with Reza Aslan’s easy-to-read and comprehensive book, No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam (Random House, 20th Anniversary Edition, Fully Updated and With a New Preface and Study Guide). The Muslim population of the world is 2.5 billion people (31 percent). From our “western” perspectives, Islam is possibly also the least understood of societal groups. Islam’s beginnings possess many of the same origins and precepts as other religions; its reverence for the other major Abrahamic religions may surprise you. This study group will begin even well before the revelations to Muhammad the merchant in Mecca and Medina — with the Prophet’s vision of a radically egalitarian community that would be shaped, challenged, and interpreted by generations of Muslims, resulting in a faith of remarkable diversity and resilience. The group will also observe the politicization of Islam, the rise of extremist ideologies, and the pervasive Islamophobia that has distorted the religion’s image.
