ClassGraphic World War II has ended. The Allies are victorious and the United States is the undisputed leader of the free world. Troops are heading home to much joy and relief. However, the Cold War is about to begin. The Communist Soviet Union, our former ally, is now our enemy. The Iron Curtain is about to drop and the fear of Communism is returning. It is widely believed that Communists have infiltrated government offices and the press, and that they control Hollywood. Our text for the study group is Red Scare: Blacklists, McCarthyism and the Making of Modern America by New York Times reporter and editor, Clay Risen, (Scribner, Simon & Schuster, 2025). Risen presents an updated history that describes the origins of the fear of Communism, how the fear destroyed lives, and how it shaped America for decades to follow. Together, we will explore the decisions, personalities, and lessons of this period. The discussions will be supplemented with videos.
