After the fall of Rome, as civilizations collapsed and libraries burned, classical learning that would eventually fuel the Renaissance was in danger of being lost. In this seven-week study group, we will track the writings of three foundational thinkers: Euclid the mathematician; Ptolemy the astronomer; and Galen the physician. These ancient works were passed hand-to-hand during a perilous thousand-year journey of survival. We will trace their route through seven cities, beginning in Alexandria, rare outposts of knowledge in a dark world. We will shine a light on the profound contributions of both the Islamic world and medieval Christian scholars, filling in the millenium between the Romans and the Renaissance. Using Violet Moller’s book The Map of Knowledge: A Thousand Year History of How Classical Ideas Were Lost and Found (Vintage Books, 2020), supplemented by text and visual media, we will go on an epic treasure hunt across a thousand years.
