The Cold War plunged the globe into a series of national, regional and global conflicts over five continents. It included relentless superpower rivalries and the threat of thermonuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union; but it also involved geopolitics and ever-shifting locations of Cold War crises and increasing use of covert operations. This study group will focus on the Cold War as a global conflict and will highlight the importance of covert operations and espionage activities on five continents as essential tools of strategy. Our text will be The Cold War on Five Continents: A Global History of Empire and Espionage by Alfred W. McCoy (Haymarket Books 2025). This book offers a new perspective on the Cold War and the contributions of individual covert operatives as well as national leaders around the globe who were key players in this conflict. As we appear to have entered a new era of global conflict, it is more essential than ever to understand the personalities and strategies that drove the Cold War and the legacy that it left for the world we live in now.
