ClassGraphic Novelist and essayist Elizabeth Hardwick (1916-2007) has been celebrated as one of America’s great postwar women of letters. She was a co-founder and advisory editor of The New York Review of Books, and she contributed more than 100 reviews, articles, reflective essays, and letters to that magazine. Hardwick is also known for her relationship with poet Robert Lowell, to whom she was married for over 20 years. What is not widely known, however, is her achievement as a short story writer, which has remained largely tucked away in literary periodicals. Her fiction is highly regarded for its psychological acuity, compressed intensity, and stylistic precision. In this seven-week study group, we’ll read all thirteen entries in The New York Stories of Elizabeth Hardwick (New York Review Books, 2010), a posthumous collection that spans nearly five decades of Hardwick’s career (1946-1993). This collection showcases her sharp wit and keen observations of life in New York City, and reflects themes that recur throughout her work, including romantic disillusionment, emotional vulnerability, loneliness within social circles, and the complex power dynamics between men and women.
