Theatre in Chicago

« back to classes page
Join us at some of Chicago’s best theaters as we attend plays performed in various venues, including Steppenwolf, Goodman, and other smaller theaters. Over the 14-week term, we will read seven scripts, followed by attending the play’s production. Each play will cover two weeks. For the first week each study group member will be responsible for reading the script before class. We will discuss the script, looking at themes, characters, and plot lines. We then attend the performance either as a group or independently with the following week devoted to how the written word translated to the stage including acting style, production, set design, and our understanding of the play. Participants will volunteer to lead each discussion. The coordinators will purchase tickets for members who wish to attend the play as a group, and members may invite a guest to accompany them. Participants are responsible for the ticket cost and the cost for obtaining the scripts. The total cost of tickets for the 14-week session range between $200-$300 while scripts cost between $15-$20 each. Participants must arrange their own transportation, although carpools can be organized as needed. We often gather for an optional lunch or dinner before the performance.
