Whether you are a longtime lover of poetry, or someone who just wants to dip a toe in to find out what it’s all about, our study group will offer you a welcoming place where we explore the work of modern and contemporary poetry. Together, we will read and discuss poems that surprise, move, challenge, and delight us, paying attention not only to what the poems say, but to how they say it. We will explore how poets fall in love with and use words, focusing on the sounds words make, the images they create, the rhythm they convey, and the unexpected ways language can reveal emotion, memory, beauty, humor, and truth. Our discussions in class will focus on the pleasures of reading closely and sharing different responses rather than finding a single “correct” interpretation. Some of the poets we have discussed in the past are voices as varied as: Ada Limon, Joy Harjo, and Arthur Sze, America’s current poet laureate. No previous experience with poetry is needed, only curiosity, a willingness to explore, and a delight in words. Material for discussion will be provided on MYOLLI.
