With the MLB contract negotiations taking place this summer and fall, we will be reading Major League Rebels by Robert Elias and Peter Dreier, (Rowman & Littlefield, 2022), the story of baseball players rebelling against corporate monopoly and the owners who dominated the players and their contracts in the past. From the early years of the Spaldings to Curt Flood and Marvin Miller to Bill Veeck, baseball has had plenty of rebellious personalities as we will learn about this fall. In the second half of the semester, we will read For The Love Of Baseball edited by Lee Gutkind and Andrew Blauner (Skyhorse, 2014), a collection of essays by well known authors such as Roger Angell, Frank Deford and George Vecsey. The pieces will pique your interest in the game of baseball. In addition, we will follow the end of the regular season playoff races and the World Series, with plenty of "infield chatter" along the way. Whether you are a rookie or veteran, feel free to join us.
