Over seven weeks, this virtual study group will explore the history and tragedy of "the Troubles” as they occurred over 30 years between the 1960s and the 1990s in Northern Ireland. Regardless of whether you’re of Irish descent, you will find that you cannot help but become emotionally moved by what happened between neighbors, family members, and friends during this period. As our text, we will read Making Sense of the Troubles (Viking, 2012) by David McKittrick. We will also view episodes of the PBS series, Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland which presents previously unseen “confessions” from both sides of the conflict - - from IRA members, Ulster military groups, and British soldiers. We will conclude with the negotiations leading up to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and the aftermath. At heart, this is a story about how ordinary people like you and me allowed themselves to destroy the world they lived in out of misguided fears and hatred of one another and, in some cases, became killers.
