As Yogi Berra was fond of saying, “The Future ain’t what it used to be.” In this study group, we will survey some of the classic science fiction short stories from the twentieth century so that we can see for ourselves what the future used to be. How did science fiction writers imagine future societies, technological change, alien life, artificial intelligence, environmental crisis, and the evolving nature of humanity? Does 2026 measure up? Our guide will be The Big Book of Science Fiction, edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer (Vintage Books, 2016), which contains over 100 short stories from many of the giants of SciFi, including Isaac Asimov, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Philip K. Dick. The study group will emphasize thoughtful conversation, literary exploration, and the social and philosophical questions raised by speculative fiction. Members will consider how science fiction reflects the hopes, fears, and challenges of the eras in which the stories were written while also speaking to contemporary issues. We welcome curious readers interested in imaginative storytelling, big ideas, and lively discussion.
