The Battle of Midway, fought from June 3 to June 7, 1942, was the most decisive naval encounter of the Pacific War. The Japanese attacked Midway Island in order to lure the U.S. Pacific Fleet's aircraft carriers to their destruction. Instead, it was Japan’s own carrier force, the Kido Butai, that was destroyed.
