Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Under Siege: In-person - Chicago - Wieboldt Hall
« back to classes page
Fall 2024 Speaker Event:
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Under Siege
Date: Thursday, September 26, 2024
Time: 12:00pm–1:00pm
Location: Chicago Wieboldt Hall, 339 E Chicago Ave, 7th floor (max 100) and Online via Zoom
Diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI) were established to build community and workplace environments that more broadly reflect all of America and to foster safer, more inclusive environments for people of all races, genders, ages, abilities, sexual orientation and religious identities. In the past year, DEI has been widely misunderstood and weaponized by critics. Dr. Manno will discuss how support behind DEI across educational, business and political spaces declined. She’ll explain why the push back occurred, what it means to those it was designed to support and how institutions failed to appropriately define and communicate the true meaning of DEI. Dr. Manno will also share the many successes of DEI and how efforts will continue to collectively build the world Americans want to see. OLLI members will have the opportunity to ask Dr. Manno questions at the end of her presentation.
Dr. Michelle Manno is Chief Diversity Officer at Northwestern University. In this role, Manno oversees The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI) including The Women’s Center and Native American Indigenous Initiatives. She leads the implementation of diversity accountability processes across Northwestern’s 12 schools and colleges on three campuses. This involves coordinating initiatives to address bigotry and exclusion while promoting inclusion, diversity, and equity.
Manno earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Emory University, with a concentration in social inequality. She is the author of Denied: Women, Sports, and the Contradictions of Identity (NYU Press).
Hosted by: The Chicago Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
