Will AI’s “Invisible Rulers” and propaganda win the election and defeat democracy?

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in spreading disinformation and poses a serious challenge for combatting fake news and protecting the integrity of online information. Most concerning is the use of AI to challenge the integrity of elections. Renee DiResta, researcher, writer and the former research manager at Stanford Internet Observatory, will delve into the profound implications of AI technologies on the integrity of democratic elections. She will explore how AI-driven propaganda and misinformation campaigns have evolved, illustrating the tactics used by malicious actors to manipulate public opinion and spread false narratives. DiResta will discuss the mechanisms behind AI-generated deepfakes, microtargeted ads, and algorithmic amplifications of misleading content, emphasizing their potential to distort voter perceptions and undermine trust in democratic institutions. She will offer insights into countermeasures, such as enhancing digital literacy, increasing transparency in AI algorithms and implementing regulatory frameworks to curb the spread of misinformation. Her presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges posed by AI in the electoral process and propose actionable solutions to safeguard democracy in the digital age. DiResta will take questions from OLLI members for 15-20 minutes.
