Four Masters of the Short Story: Carver, Cheever, de Maupassant, Welty (In person)
« back to classes page
Stories portray the details of everyday life and people — the human comedy. The four master storytellers in this group, and their stories come from the American Northwest, New England, France and Mississippi – different cultures, different eras, and different characters we’ll come to know as well as we know ourselves. Raymond Carver, John Cheever, Guy de Maupassant, and Eudora Welty introduce readers to personalities, settings and situations that challenge our understanding of the world and then make us believers in its humanity. With two stories from different authors each week chosen by study group members, we will explore, contrast, and discover universal themes among idiosyncratic situations and characters. The texts we will use are as follows: Raymond Carver,
What We Talk About When We Talk About Love: Stories
(Vintage, 1989); John Cheever,
The Stories of John Cheever,
(Vintage, 2000); Guy de Maupassant,
The Best Short Stories,
(Wordsworth Classics,1997, 1999); Eudora Welty,
The Collected Stories of Eudora Welty
, (Mariner,1980).
