The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Many of us know Rachel Carson as the author of Silent Spring. Few know that she began her career as a marine biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries and Wildlife, working in that field until she became a full-time nature writer in the 1950s. She published The Sea Around Us in 1951. The book is a work of elegant and lyrical prose grounded in deep scientific knowledge that remains relevant today. It was on The New York Times Best Seller List for 86 weeks and has been translated into 28 languages. Our study group will look at Carson's work both as a literary and as a popular scientific achievement. We will contemplate how someone who didn't like boats or know how to swim developed a profound love for the ocean. Our text is The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson (Oxford University Press, 2018).
