The Rise of Christian Nationalism into the Heart of US Power

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic The separation of church and state has deep roots in American history. However, in the past decade the belief that the United States was founded as a Christian nation and that its laws and institutions should be based on conversative Christian values now has support among an estimated 30% of Americans. Many of our government leaders now support Christian Nationalism. We have seen examples of this in judicial appointments, policy decisions on healthcare and public education, and the inclusion of Christian practices in public spaces. The rise of anti-immigration, antisemitism, and anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs, as well as a return to traditional gender roles and a call for white racial solidarity, are also fueled by Christian Nationalism. Our study group will explore its history and beliefs, its impact on American laws and society, and the pushback it is receiving from many religious and non-religious sectors. We'll be using two New York Times best-selling books, Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation (Liveright Publishing, 2021) and Separation of Church and Hate (Avid Reader Press, 2025). Supplemental articles, videos and guest speakers will enhance our lively conversations.
