This study group will look at several lesser-known federal agencies and the critical functions they provide. Did you know the Department of Commerce has little to do with commerce? Or that most of the Department of Agriculture has little to do with agriculture? Did you know the Department of Energy manages international nuclear risk and tracks and locates black market uranium? Or that it is helping to fight opioid abuse using the artificial intelligence capabilities of its world’s fastest supercomputers? This 7-week study group will focus on the critical functions performed by these and other agencies--not on bashing the current or previous administrations. Our book, The Fifth Risk (W.W. Norton & Company, 2018), authored by Michael Lewis, takes us into the engine rooms of these and other agencies and will be supplemented by websites and online articles. We will also be looking at several agencies not covered in the book, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and at some of the data collected by the federal government that keeps us all safer.
