Modern physics refers to our understanding of physical nature since the advent of relativity and quantum mechanics. It has enabled a new perspective of the meaning of matter, energy and time in an evolving universe. This study group will explore this new perspective using Until the End of Time: Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning in an Evolving Universe by Brian Greene (Knopf, 2020). Greene, a Professor of Physics and Mathematics at Columbia University, is a best-selling author. This group is a continuation of an ongoing exploration of the theoretical foundations of modern physics. Previous groups in this OLLI series have focused on the deep mathematical theories that have provided physicists with the ability to explain and predict the behavior of the physical world and the origins and evolution of the vast universe. This group will explore its meaning through the eyes of an eminent practitioner of modern physics. The study group is intended to build a broad theoretical knowledge of physics for non-physicists and serious science groupies. A familiarity with college-level calculus and physics, and participation in previous Theoretical Foundations OLLI study groups is recommended. This group welcomes all members, regardless of background, who are prepared to actively participate in a unique, intellectually challenging peer learning experience.
