Police Reform in Unsettling Times: A Live Panel Discussion.
For the first time in the city’s history, Chicago is under a federal court order mandating broad police reform. The goal of that court order—known as a consent decree—is to put in place reforms that govern police training and policies and provide officers the support they need to implement safe and constitutional policing practices. It is also the first step to rebuilding trust between Chicago’s residents and police. This reform comes at a time when Chicago is experiencing a rise in violent crime causing residents to be concerned about their safety.
The Diversity and Inclusion Committee has assembled a panel of prominent voices in police reform who will share their knowledge and take questions. The panel is comprised of professionals from the fields of criminal justice reform, journalism, law enforcement and community organizations dedicated to reducing violence and building relationships with the police.
We will learn about what progress the city has made, what still needs to be addressed, the obstacles to police reform, and a behind the scenes look at the planning of police reform. Registrants will receive a short optional reading providing information on police reform, and will have an opportunity to submit questions for the panel in advance of the session.
Panelists include:
  • Amy Campanelli — Vice President of Restorative Justice, Lawndale Christian Legal Center; former Cook County Public Defender
  • Heather Cherone — Political Reporter who covers police reform, WTTW/Chicago PBS
  • Tara Dabney — Director of Development and Communications, Institute for Non-Violence, Chicago
  • Dr. Aaron Gottlieb — Assistant Professor, University of Illinois, Chicago, Jane Addams College of Social Work

Presented by the Chicago Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
