Beyond the Classroom: OLLI Ventures Out!
A Day of Mexican Art & Culture in Pilsen
Meets at the National Museum of Mexican Art,
1852 W. 19th St., Chicago
Join us for a 3-part experience:
* National Museum of Mexican Art
The National Museum of Mexican Art, the largest Latino cultural institution in the United States, holds one of the largest collections of Mexican art in the United States. Our docent-led tour will offer an in-depth view of the museum’s anchor exhibition, “Nuestras Historias: Stories of Mexican Identity,” and we will have additional time to view other featured art, including “Frida Kahlo, Her Photos,” a special exhibition of photographs that belonged to her personally, many taken by noted photographers, and to visit the museum's unique Place of the Hummingbird gift shop.
* Murals Of Pilsen
Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood has seen many immigrant groups come and go. By the 1950s, Mexicans began arriving in large numbers, and today the neighborhood is a thriving hub of Mexican art and culture. Our Pilsen mural walking tour will enable us to see some of the neighborhoods’ most iconic pieces of public art, travelling through 50 years of the history, struggles, and culture of the Mexican community in Pilsen expressed through vibrant street murals. The political and socio-economic role of murals in this resilient community, which is currently facing tough challenges in the city’s changing landscape, will also be discussed. Our guide will be veteran mural guide and Pilsen resident Luis Tubens, who will help us understand the murals and how Pilsen became the neighborhood with the highest concentration of murals in the Midwest. Lace up your walking shoes because you are about to travel through a street gallery of unique murals.
* Fiesta Lunch:
Enjoy lunch with fellow OLLI classmates on your own at any of the many popular Pilsen restaurants. Recommendations to follow.
Tour Fee (includes docent led museum tour and docent led mural tour): $10.00
RAIN or SHINE
NOTE: This activity requires standing and walking up to a mile. Additional event logistics provided after registration.
