The Fourth Estate in Film

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic The setting for numerous films throughout the history of the moving image has been the Fourth Estate. Deadlines, intrepid reporters, high-minded publishers, loyalty to the truth and the First Amendment with hijinks in and out of the newsroom have been featured. In this study group, we will view and discuss The Post (2017), Good Night and Good Luck (2005), Libeled Lady (1936), and Call Northside 777 (1948). Each week a study group member will volunteer to present a short introduction to that week's film with questions for discussion. The introduction may be the production history of the film, short cast biographies or any other topic that will enhance the viewing and discussion of the film. Use of video is welcomed but not necessary or required. The ability to navigate Canvas and to view each film through a streaming service or other medium is required as members will watch the film at home prior to coming to the discussion. Comments, opinions, and anecdotes are welcomed and encouraged.
