Join us as we tour New York City with the New York School Poets. In this study group, we will consider the history and development of individual members of the group, as well as their relationships to each other, their relationship to the Abstract Expressionist painters, their relationship to New York City itself, and their lasting legacy. Our text will be
The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets by David Lehman (Anchor, 1999), which will be supplemented with close readings of many poems by the members of the NY School: John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, and Barbara Guest. The book is widely available in the new or used book market, and all poems will be distributed as either handouts or web links.
