Exploring the Visual Arts

« back to classes page
This summer we will explore an Empress, a museum of modern art curator, and a treasure trove of modern art. In the 1970s, Donna Stein became the art advisor to the last Empress of Iran. So began a collaboration to create a legacy collection. What pieces would establish Tehran as a world-class destination for art? The main reference for this study group is The Empress and I: How an Ancient Empire Collected, Rejected and Rediscovered Modern Art by Donna Stein (Skira, 2021). This book explores cultural relevance and the art world. It is a vivid account of a cross-cultural initiative. Donna Stein’s narrative opens the door to a time in history; it inspires our exploration of art in this region of the world. Each week we will make our way through her book with supplemental materials to enrich our discussions. Our study group will look deeper into the role these women played in the art world, the pieces they acquired, and the creative work in this region today.
