Tuesday at the Movies

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Let us revisit the classics. We will view movies that are 40 or more years old. We will discuss how these true classics stood the test of time thanks to their exceptional storytelling, themes, or performances and why a classic is just as great, if not better, upon repeat viewings. Each movie has been recognized by the Academy of Arts and Sciences as Best Movie of the Year. The movies we will study are: Citizen Cane (1941, Orson Wells); Singin' in the Rain (1952, Gene Kelly); The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966, Sergio Leone); Seven Samurai (1954, Akira Kurosawa); Rebecca (1940, Alfred Hitchock); It Happened One Night (1934, Frank Capra); Mutiny on the Bounty (1935, Frank Lloyd); The French Connection (1971, William Friedkin); West Side Story (1961, Jerome Robbins); Rocky (1976, John Alvidson); Gone With the Wind (1939, Victor Fleming); Patton (1970, Franklin Schaffner); Midnight Cowboy (1969, John Schlesinger); Some Like it Hot (1959, Billy Wilder). We will watch each week's movie in advance of the study group session. Members must obtain the movies on their own; movies can usually be found via streaming services or at a library. Each movie will be presented by one study group member who will lead the discussion.
