Democracy Awakening

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Acceptance of electoral results is fundamental to the legitimacy of democratic institutions. However, this is now being challenged at the local, national, and international levels. Is it time for democracy to take heed and resist the exhortations to become more authoritarian? Professor Heather Cox Richardson of Boston College in her book Democracy Awakening (Viking Press, 2023) summarizes the state of American democracy and the pathway to arrive at our current condition. Starting from the Declaration of Independence through the Civil War, she states that the protection of democracy is rooted in the Declaration and is driven by the belief that we are all created equal and that we have a say in our democracy. Over the course of this study group, we will discuss and analyze these concepts and draw our own conclusions of where our democracy needs to be strengthened. We will base our discussions on current opinion from across the political spectrum as well as the experts in the room.
