« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Expand your mind and behold the expanding universe. We are going on a journey far beyond our familiar earth, solar system and Milky Way Galaxy to a realm of quasars, black holes, dark matter, dark energy and much more. We will read and discuss Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson (Norton, 2017). Tyson takes us from the beginning of time, fourteen billion years ago, when in Tyson’s words, “all the matter and all the space of the known universe was contained in a volume less than one-trillionth the size of the period that ends this sentence,” to the outer reaches of our known universe. In addition to increasing our fundamental knowledge, a cosmic perspective will provide wisdom and insight about our place in the universe. Supplemental readings and videos will be provided. Knowledge of scientific principles will be helpful but is not essential. Familiarity with Canvas is expected. Participants may need to use the internet to look up unfamiliar concepts and ideas they come across in assignments and to identify supplemental materials for a class session they may lead. Note: No class on 05/28/18
