Plato said, “Poetry comes nearer to vital truth than history.” Welcome, poetry lovers! Join us in this “World of Poetry,” where we’ll search for vital truth in the works of a variety of poets, both classic and modern. We will take turns choosing a poet and leading a discussion of his/her poems. After a brief sketch of the poet, we’ll read the poems aloud and examine them closely, sharing our opinions, questions, and associations to the subject matter, as well as their imagery and form. The Poetry Foundation, www.poets.org, Poetry Magazine
and other sources of information on poetry may be presented. We may listen to interviews with and readings by poets and possibly examine relevant essays or book reviews. We’ll keep each other informed of poetry events around town and may attend one or two together. This study group, however, will mainly be about the poets we select — reading their poetry, discovering their magic, and sharing our often disparate thoughts. No previous poetry study is required.
