Noontime Lecture Series (CH)

Our Noontime lecture series is held at lunchtime on the Chicago campus. The series is free and open to all current OLLI members. While dance as an art form is widely admired for its beauty and spectacle, many viewers struggle to understand the ways that dances create meaning. This gap between admiration and knowledge leaves many audience members feeling excluded from understanding the choreographer’s intention. In this interactive presentation, Peter Carpenter will provide different lenses and points of access for understanding dance and will help participants to look at dance with a critical eye. Looking at video documentation of 20th and 21st Century choreographers, participants will be encouraged to recognize their own preferences and priorities in viewing dance.  Peter Carpenter is an arts educator, performing artist, and arts administrator. He currently serves as the Chair of Dance and Interim Chair of Theatre at Columbia College Chicago. His theatrical choreography work includes engagements with Steppenwolf Arts Exchange, The Goodman, Strawdog, National Pastime, Roadworks, 29th Street Repertory (New York), and Street Signs. He holds a B.S. in Theatre, a M.F.A. in Dance,  and Ph.D. in Culture and Performance.
